County jails are run by sheriffs or, in Denver, the local sheriff department. The Colorado Department of Corrections, or DOC, holds and supervises people committed to state custody after sentence. A felony allegation alone does not place a new arrestee in DOC. Neither system covers every person held in Colorado. A federal detainee can remain temporarily in a county contract bed, while a sentenced federal prisoner belongs in the Bureau of Prisons system. Juvenile custody may be intentionally absent from public tools. Immigration custody and another state's prisoners use still other systems. Always identify the legal custodian before deciding that a name search failed.
Colorado DOC Offender Search
The Colorado DOC Offender Search, also reached through the official Colorado inmate service gateway, is the primary statewide prison locator. Search it for a person in Colorado correctional custody or tracked under DOC supervision. It does not contain current county bookings. A DOC number is the strongest key because names, aliases, and birth details can collide. Profile fields may be blank, and custody locations can change after classification or transfer.
The locator can show current facility or supervision status, sentence information, offense descriptions, and estimated parole or release data where applicable. Those projected dates are not promises. Sentence computation, earned time, detainers, corrected court orders, parole decisions, or disciplinary status can change them. Obtain the judgment and sentence from the filing court when the exact legal disposition matters.

Colorado County Jail Rosters
Colorado has no single statewide sheriff roster. Each county publishes or confirms its own bookings on its own schedule. The official Denver Sheriff search is a useful example, but its fields cannot be promised elsewhere. Some counties show current custody only; others include recent releases. A city police arrest can still result in county jail custody, and a boundary arrest or housing contract can send a person to a neighboring county.
County jails commonly hold people during booking and advisement, pretrial detainees, people held on one or more warrants, and people serving local sentences or awaiting DOC transfer. A booking charge is an agency allegation, not proof of conviction. The court controls the bond order, and another jurisdiction's hold can block release even after one bond is paid.
Three custodians may describe the same event in different ways. The arresting police agency keeps the releasable arrest report, the sheriff keeps the booking and custody record, and the Clerk of Court keeps the bond order and criminal case. How to Find Colorado Inmates

If the search still returns nothing, confirm which agency transported the person and whether medical clearance, release on summons, a municipal holding arrangement, juvenile custody, another county's warrant, or a federal hold changed the location. Call the sheriff through its verified government site. Give a full legal name and birth date only through an official channel. A public jail search may intentionally omit a juvenile or protected person.

A judicial officer conducts a prompt advisement and sets or reviews release conditions. Colorado cases can involve personal-recognizance release, secured financial conditions, surety, nonfinancial supervision, or a hold or no-bond status when authorized. Each line matters. The jail displays custody, while the signed court order governs bond. For the underlying allegations and disposition, consult the court file rather than treating custody as a conviction.
Note: One paid bond does not release a Colorado inmate who has another case, detainer, sentence, or jurisdictional hold.

Colorado VINE searches custody data supplied by participating agencies and lets users register for supported release, transfer, escape, or status notifications. It is free, but feed participation and timing vary. A search does not enroll alerts. Keep the registration PIN and contact details private, and recheck with the agency when safety is critical.
VINE status should be read as information supplied by a participating agency, not as a court judgment or a promise of release. Register for notifications when ongoing notice matters. Repeated searches alone do not create an alert, and a missing participating-agency update should be checked with the jail or DOC victim-services channel when safety is at stake.

Federal Inmates in Colorado
Federal custody is separate from Colorado DOC. Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator for a person serving a federal sentence. Federal detainees may spend time in a local contract jail, so a sheriff roster can show temporary custody without making the case a Colorado prosecution. Identity needs more than a shared name. Compare the DOC or booking number, full name, aliases, birth data, custody agency, event date, and known court facts. A photograph can help where publication is lawful, but it is not a substitute for the numbered agency record. When the location or release date will guide travel, money, service, or a safety plan, confirm it directly on the day it matters.
